Everyone Needs Tools

Last weekend I was staining my deck. A friend loaned me a paint brush with an extension handle much like a broom.  I began to stain and like anyone that does not do a task often, was experiencing upper back discomfort and tightness.  I noticed it and then I got rid of it. How? Tools.

Knowledge is a tool.  Being I work in ergonomics and happen to be a physical therapist I have the tools in my toolbox(mind) to make corrections.  I immediately instructed myself to keep the handle close to my body and use my body and legs to paint vs just my arms.  To get immediate relief I performed a cat/camel mobility exercise and some upper trunk reaching and stretching.  All discomfort ceased.

Tools are important for your employees too.  You would not have an apprentice plumber do advanced plumbing without training and proper tools. Proper injury prevention and ergonomic training gives employees tools for their toolbox so they can make best decisions about their working postures and techniques.

Employees also need training in awareness of their physical and mental self.  Are they tired? Being tired effects decision making as well as postures. Are they feeling fatigue in a body part from a sustained or poor posture? Static and poor postures can lead to discomfort and eventually pain and MSDs.  Are they stressed? Stress can affect work quality, postures and decision making. When workers are self-aware, they can use the tools they have learned to address their individual needs.

Do not leave your workers empty handed. Give them and yourself the proper tools to make good decisions.  Training in ergonomics, early signs, and symptoms of MSDs, managing postures and overall wellness can improve the productivity, employee morale, and general health of your staff.
