Why Compression Socks Should be Part of Your Work Wardrobe

Everyone has heard of compression socks. They are used after surgery (medical grade with higher compression), recommended for long flights, and endurance athletes are wearing them. Why would you need them for your work wardrobe?

What happens when we sit or stand for prolonged periods?

Prolonged standing or sitting has detriments regarding our circulation.  We need to move.  Circulation in our legs is based on muscle contraction to assist the blood flow. The veins in our legs are the furthest from our heart. When you are sitting or standing, gravity pulls the blood downward which may cause pooling in your legs. This makes it tougher to return blood to the heart.

What do compression socks do?

Compression socks are graduated with pressure being higher at the ankles and decreasing up the leg. This compression helps prevent pooling of blood in the legs from lack of movement and allows for better blood flow. Compression socks can decrease swelling in your legs, help prevent spider veins, varicose veins and decrease risk for blood clots. They can decrease fatigue in your legs and help prevent getting light-headed for those with lower blood pressure.

What type of work benefits from compression socks?

Office workers, manufacturing workers, healthcare workers, bartenders, pilots, and any worker that is on their feet for prolonged periods or is required to perform static sitting or standing as part of their jobs should consider wearing compression socks.  Compression socks will benefit your circulatory system and your overall health and wellness.
